The Diamond Color Scale
Explaining the Diamond Color Grade
WHAT IS DIAMOND COLOR?
Diamond color is actually determined by the absence of color. Diamonds with no hue are rarer and more valuable.
WHAT IS THE DIAMOND COLOR GRADING SCALE?
The diamond grading scale starts at D (colorless) and continues down the alphabet describing a progressively yellower diamond with each letter, ending at Z. It may seem random that the scale starts with the letter D rather than A, but when the GIA grading system was created in the 1950's, there were inconsistent grading efforts in the diamond industry that used A, B and C. GIA determined to start the color scale at D to avoid any confusion with earlier grading systems.
WHAT DO THE COLOR GRADES REALLY MEAN?
When looking closely at diamond colors, the distinctions within categories can be difficult to see. Diamonds graded D, E, or F are considered colorless as none of them have obvious yellow or brown hues.
The color grades G, H, and I are near colorless diamonds, and most will likely think they look white unless they are compared right next to a colorless diamond under sunlight or controlled lighting.
The subtle yellow tone becomes more noticeable to the naked eye at the J grade and continues to be more evident down to Z.
Keep in mind that a near colorless or yellow diamond will look more yellow when set in white gold or platinum. A yellow gold setting will allow the yellow hues to blend more and not be as obvious. Conversely, a yellow or rose gold setting can cause a colorless diamond to reflect some of the gold color.
DOES DIAMOND COLOR MATTER?
While colorless diamonds are more valuable, some people prefer the warmer tones of diamonds that exhibit some yellow color. There are also fancy color diamonds that are also considered rare and can cost more than colorless diamonds. It really comes down to personal preference!
CAN DIAMOND COLORS CHANGE OVER TIME?
Due to their composition, diamond colors will not change or fade over time. They may appear dull or yellow if there is a buildup of dust, makeup or residue but this can be resolved with cleaning.
