A Diamond Shape Guide to the Pear Cut
history
The pear-shaped diamond is a combination of the beloved round cut diamond and the elongated marquise cut. The first pear cut diamond was created in 1475 by a Flemish diamond cutter named Lodewyk van Bercken. Van Bercken invented a diamond polishing wheel called a scaif, which allowed him to cut completely symmetrical facets onto a diamond, thus allowing for the development of more intricate and unique shaped diamond cuts. Van Bercken’s pear cut had 58 facets which is now the standard for pear cut diamonds.
what qualities should i look for in a pear cut?
When choosing a pear cut diamond, it is important to pay attention to the cut ratio and the color. Common dimensions for pear cuts are 7x5mm, 8x5mm, 9x6mm, and 10x7mm. Consider which look you prefer when shopping for a pear cut diamond or gemstone.
Another element consider with the cut is the symmetry of the stone. Excellent pear cuts have full, rounded sides with no flat areas allowing for more brilliance. They also have sleek, curved lines going up to the point like a marquise cut. A well-cut pear should not have any light leakage and should have a bow tie effect in the center of the stone.
We recommend looking for a clarity of SI1 or better that does not have any visible inclusions that distract from the beauty of the diamond. A color grade of H or better also highlights the sparkle from a brilliant diamond.
