Oval Diamond Education
a diamond shape guide to ovals
history
Due to their elongated shape, oval diamonds appear larger than round or square diamond shapes of similar carat weight.
While it may seem as though oval diamonds are a more recent trend, oval cuts have been used in fine jewelry for hundreds of years. Oval cuts containing 57-58 facets were developed in 1957 by Lazare Kaplan. He modified the round brilliant cut for an oval shape, combining the brilliance of the round’s faceting style with the beautiful oval shape! Since this modification, oval diamonds have been a popular diamond shape for engagement rings.
Qualities to Look For
The brilliant facets and rounded shape of an oval diamond help to obscure many inclusions and imperfections from the naked eye. However, with a shallower cut of an oval diamond, it shifts the color scale slightly. A higher color quality grade is going to be more important than a higher clarity grade, when looking to purchase a pretty oval diamond.
Symmetry is an important part of the beauty of an oval diamond. When you draw an imaginary line down the center of the diamond, the facets and shape of each half of the diamond should mirror each other.
How To Wear
When you are looking to buy an oval diamond, it is important to know the desired look you are wanting for your ring. An oval diamond will have the visual effect of lengthening the finger. This could be a lovely match for those with fuller hands or shorter fingers. The narrower and more elongated the oval shape, the stronger the lengthening effect. If the oval is more rounded and wider than long, it will have a more subtle lengthening effect, so it would be perfect for those with slender fingers already. Keep in mind it is all personal preference while ring shopping!
