How to Tell if a Diamond Ring Is Real
Have you ever looked at a ring you own, or one you're thinking about buying, and wondered, Is this a real diamond?
What Real Actually Means When It Comes to Diamonds
Before trying any tests, it's helpful to define what "real" means.
A natural diamond and a lab grown diamond are both real diamonds. They're chemically and structurally the same. The difference is how they're formed.
Materials like cubic zirconia and moissanite aren't diamonds, even though they can look surprisingly similar at first glance.
Most at-home tests aren't meant to separate a natural diamond from a lab grown diamond. They're better at identifying stones that clearly aren't diamonds.
5 Ways to Learn More About a Diamond Ring at Home
What These Observations Can and Cannot Tell You
These at-home checks are useful because they narrow the possibilities. They may rule out obvious simulants like glass or plastic.
They won't reliably distinguish a natural diamond, lab grown diamond or high-quality moissanite from one another. Those stones require professional equipment and training to identify with confidence.
If the origin of your stone matters, documentation or a professional evaluation is the only reliable answer.
Deciding If You Need Professional Verification
Not every diamond ring needs professional testing, but some situations make it worthwhile.
You may want a jeweler's opinion if:
- The ring is a family heirloom.
- You're planning to insure it.
- The purchase represented a significant financial investment.
- You simply want peace of mind.
- You expect to sell or appraise the ring in the future.
A diamond grading report, from GIA, IGI or another recognized laboratory, provides documentation that at-home tests simply can't.
Olive Ave as Your Guide
Every diamond we sell includes a professional grading report: GIA for natural diamonds, IGI or GCAL for lab-grown. Those reports verify cut, color, clarity and diamond authenticity, so you'll know exactly what you're wearing.
If you visit one of our Arizona or Utah showrooms, or shop virtually with us, we'll explain the differences in plain language. We can also answer questions about an existing ring or help you select a setting for a custom design.
Buying a diamond should feel exciting, not uncertain.
