Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real?
Learn what lab-grown diamonds are, how they compare to mined diamonds, and why they’re a real, beautiful, and ethical choice for fine jewelry.
If you’re exploring lab diamonds as a modern, ethical, and beautiful diamond option, here’s everything you need to know.
What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?
Lab-grown diamonds are made of pure carbon, just like natural diamonds. They are created using intense heat and pressure that closely mimics the conditions found beneath the Earth’s surface.
There are two primary methods used to create lab diamonds:
- HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature): This process replicates the natural diamond‑forming environment by subjecting carbon to extremely high heat and pressure, resulting in a crystallized diamond.
- CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition): CVD diamonds are grown layer by layer from a carbon-rich gas, producing diamonds with exceptional optical and structural quality.
Both methods produce diamonds that are structurally, chemically, and optically identical to mined diamonds, and just as durable.
Are Lab Diamonds as Strong as Natural Diamonds?
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds rate a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, the highest possible score. This means they are just as resistant to scratching and everyday wear as mined diamonds.
They’re designed to last a lifetime, and then some.
Certified and Graded Like Natural Diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds can be GIA or IGI certified and are graded using the same Four Cs as natural diamonds:
- Cut
- Color
- Clarity
- Carat
At Olive Ave, we recommend choosing F+ color and VS1+ clarity for a crisp, bright, and timeless look that photographs beautifully and sparkles in every light.
Do Lab-Grown Diamonds All Look the Same?
Not at all. Just like mined diamonds, every lab-grown diamond is unique. Each has its own natural characteristics, inclusions, proportions, and personality. You still get to choose a diamond that speaks to you.
Can You Tell the Difference Between Lab and Natural Diamonds?
Not without specialized equipment.
To the naked eye, and even under a jeweler’s loupe, lab-grown and natural diamonds are visually indistinguishable. While lab diamonds may contain trace elements or gases from the growth process, these details do not impact a diamond’s beauty, performance, or durability in any way.
That’s how identical they truly are.
